- Tattooing was fully banned in 1872 by Emperor Meiji which drove tattooing underground, due to this tattooing was picked up by those participating in criminal activities such as prostitution and gangs
- Low ranking Geisha or prostitutes were forced to get these tattoos as a sign of devotion to said gang
- Yakuza tattoos are a rite of passage, symbolizing their defiance of the government and social society, but also proving their loyalty to their country's rich heritage 
- Some Yakuza have opted to have their tattoos preserved after death, with the process known as 'skinning'
